Platform: Windows (All Versions)

The standard command prompt that comes with all Windows versions is quite limited, especially if you look at what third party developers have to offer. An excellent example is ConEmu (which is short for " Cons:
There are no obvious drawbacks to address.

With its large array of useful tools and its smart functionality, ConEmu is a must-have tool, regardless of what you are working on.

Pros

You can work on several consoles, on the same window. The application allows you to attach external applications, along with their interfaces, to your tabs. It is also possible to integrate ConEmu in Windows Explorer, which gives you many more possibilities.

ole Emulator"). It provides a vast range of useful features, which can make everything much easier for developers or administrators. You can open multiple consoles on separate tabs, display applications with simple user interfaces and much more. The application comes with many customization options as well, so you can make it look and feel however you want. ConEmu is offered completely free of charge, but donations are welcomed, if you wish to make one. Installing the application does not take long, but you may want to take your time to see what options will be displayed during the process and when you run the application for the first time. You don't have to meet any special requirements, but you can install various plug-ins for ConEmu if you want to. The user interface looks quite simple at a first glance, but it hides many interesting features, like the possibility of selecting, copying and pasting text. Another interesting feature is the possibility of selecting text vertically. One of the first things you will notice is the fact that you may open new consoles, on separate tabs. When creating a new tab, a small window will show up, on which you can choose a console type and a startup directory, run the new console for the current user or other ones and make other settings. Besides "cmd" consoles, you can also open PowerShell and ANSII colors consoles, with or without administrative rights. By default, each console is displayed on its own tab, but you can also split the main interface, to show multiple consoles at the same time. Right clicking a console's tab will reveal a series of options, for killing or restarting the console, applying different color palettes, displaying its properties window, detaching the console from the main interface and much more. What's more, you can attach external applications, with simple interfaces, to your tabs. For example, if you attach a running browser to one of your tabs, you can visit websites and use the browser's tools, within ConEmu's interface. This action can be performed via command lines. ConEmu can be integrated in Windows Explorer, which gives you the possibility of opening a new console, with a specific startup directory, from a standard explorer window. It is also possible to display a console within an explorer window. The application's features are too many to count, especially if you install a few plugins as well, but you can be sure that it has everything you need to make your work faster, easier and more comfortable.
